Chapter 7: My Dinner Goes Up in Smoke


In chapter 7 Percy has his first meal at Camp Half-Blood and he gets settled into his role at camp. Percy is staying in Cabin Eleven, the Cabin of Hermes. Hermes is the Greek god of messengers, medicine, travelers, merchants, and thieves.

  • Who is Luke's father, and how do you think Luke feels about being head counselor of the Hermes Cabin at Camp Half-Blood.

  Chapter 6: I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom

Percy Jackson becomes more familiar with Camp Half-Blood in chapter 6. Percy gets a tour of the Camp with Chiron and Annabeth. He sees the camp's enchanting forest, stables, archery range, amphitheatre, javelin range, and armory. Percy wonders what type of camp needs an armory? (An armory is a building used by armies to store weapons and armor.) Percy is assigned a bunk and has a nice tour of camp until his run-in with Clarisse and the children of Aries.
  • Describe your impression of Camp Half-Blood.
    • What do you think lives in the Forest?
  • Describe Percy's cabin. Where is he staying and why?
  •  Write about Percy's encounter with Clarisse and describe how he became the Supreme Lord of the Bathroom.

    Chapter 5 Response

    Chapter 5: I Play Pinochle with a Horse
     
     
    Things have gone from strange to downright bizarre in Percy Jackson's life. When his Pre-Algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds, tried to kill him it was hard to believe, but we've all met some crazy teachers! However, being chased by The Minotaur, your best friend is a goat-boy called a Satyr, and your mom evaporates before your eyes is too much! Percy Jackson MUST be losing his mind!
     
    ...Except Percy Jackson is not crazy, and he is not alone. Percy begins to recover from his narrow escape from Montauk Beach in a new setting. He is in the care of an old friend and a new girl whom he has never seen before.
    • Describe your feelings as a reader when Rick Riordan introduces us to Camp HalfBlood, Mr. D., Annabeth, and Mr. Brunner, er...I mean, Chiron.

    Chapter 4: My Mother Teaches Me Bullfighting
     
    In the previous chapter we realize, along with Percy, that there are some really important details about his life that Percy doesn't know...including the small detail that there have been numerous attemps on his life! Percy flees from the beach cottage with his mom and Grover, and they are being chased by some new and evil demon!
    • What is after Percy?
    • Why do you think the ladies knitting wanted to kill Percy?
    • Who do you think Mrs. Dodds really was?
     
    In the end of the chapter Percy saves Grover's life, however, he is not able to save his mother.
    • What advice would you give to Percy as he comes to terms with the loss of his mom?

    Chapter 3: Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants

    This chapter of Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief fills the reader in on some of the details of Percy's life outside of Yancy Academy.
    • Describe Percy Jackson's relationship with his mom.
    • How does Percy feel about his stepfather Gabe Ugliano?
    • What does Percy believe about his birth father compared to what his mother tells him? How do you think Percy feels about his birth father?
    The end of chapter 3 gives us some details about Percy's friend Grover.

    Chapter 2:
    Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death

    In chapter 2, Percy Jackson in getting ready to take his 6th grade final exams. He is worried that his favorite teacher, Mr. Brunner, is going to be disappointed in his grade on his Latin final. When he goes to get extra help from Mr. Brunner he is surprised to find his best friend Grover is already talking to his Latin teacher...except instead of talking about the test they are talking about him, Percy Jackson!

    • Describe the conversation Percy Jackson overhears Mr. Brunner and Grover having.
    • Make predictions and inferences about what is going to happen in this book based on what Percy hears.

    I Accidentally Vaporize my Pre-Algebra Teacher
     
    Chapter one of Percy Jackson and The Lightening Thief introudices the reader to Percy Jackson. Please describe your impressions of Percy. Include one text-to-self connection between the life of the character Percy Jackson and your own. Include evidence, a quation with a page number from the text to illustrate and prove your connection to Percy.
     
    ex:) ...Sometimes I feel just like Percy Jackson. When he describes on page 12, "...my brain falls alseep or something, and the Next thing I know I've missed something, as if a puzzle piece fell out of the universe and left me staring at the blank place behind it." I can connect to Percy Jackson becuase sometimes I wake up from a good daydream and it is like life has continued on without me and I have to catch up to what everyone is busy doing and talking about. I seomtimes feel bewildered but more often I wish I could return to my beautiful daydream.
