Chapter 5: I Play Pinochle with a Horse
Things have gone from strange to downright bizarre in Percy Jackson's life. When his Pre-Algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds, tried to kill him it was hard to believe, but we've all met some crazy teachers! However, being chased by The Minotaur, your best friend is a goat-boy called a Satyr, and your mom evaporates before your eyes is too much! Percy Jackson MUST be losing his mind!
...Except Percy Jackson is not crazy, and he is not alone. Percy begins to recover from his narrow escape from Montauk Beach in a new setting. He is in the care of an old friend and a new girl whom he has never seen before.

- Who are these new and changed characters and what role do you predict they will play in Percy's life?
Percy Jackson and his mother have a very strong relationship. They are just like any other mother and son relationship. His mother always protects him no mater what. However Percy and Gil are another story. Percy HATES Gil’s stinky guts. At first Percy thinks his birth father was their when he was born. Then his mother told him that his father only thought his mother was exspecting a baby so he wasn’t there for the pregnetce. Later in the chapter when Percy and his mother was at the beach he saw Grover and he when they got in the car Percy noticed his best friend had goat legs.

Their job is to chase Percy Jackson I don’t know why but it sound dangerous .Ms Dodds, those old ladies, and the Minotaur. They are all weird the weird. Percy Jackson is not crazy he just doesn’t know what going on.
ReplyDeleteas a reader i think the way Rick Riordan introduced us to the camp halfblood added a twist to the story. the other sides of the old and new charictors also added a twist to the story. i think these halfbloods and this camp is there for a perticular reason. i think they are there to help the other halfbloods get better to fight. maybe Percy is there to leaarn to fight, kill, and learn his powers.
ReplyDeleteMy feelings as a reader when Rick Riordan introduces us to Camp Half-Blood is that this is where Percy will be staying while he tries to find out what is happening in his life, and who he is. I feel that Mr.D, Annabeth, and Chiron are important in Percy’s life because Rick Riordan takes time to describe these characters, but if the character was not so important he would most likely not describe them so vividly. Mr.D is a new character, his name is Dionysus and he is Zeus’s son. Dionysus is the god of wine, and also the camp director. I think the role Mr.D plays in Percy’s life is to train him for the worst, during his stay at Camp Half-Blood.
ReplyDeleteAnother new character in this book is Annabeth. Annabeth is a camper at Camp Half-Blood, and she has been there longer then everyone else. I think Annabeth’s role in Percy’s life is to show him around the camp and to help him fit in. Percy has also met Mr.Brunner again but that was just his cover up name, Mr.Brunner’s real name is Chiron. Chiron is a centaur, and I think his role in Percy’s life is to help him understand the reality in all of the things that are happening. I think Chiron’s other role in Percy’s life might be to tell him more about the Greek gods and who they are.

In this book it talks about how percy jackson went to the summer camp and and i think as a reader if i was to discribe the feelings of the camp and mr.d i will say that i fill bad for percy because he went to camp and mr.d dont rilley like him and his old teacher is there but is trying to know who mr.d is rilley is. these new characters is going to predict percy because there had been allot of things in percy like and all the mansters are going afther percy so i think the new character and they are going to help him just like his friend.
While reading through this book I had so many emotions like,sad, scared and, mad. When Rick introduces me to camp Halfblood i get scared although i feel like nothing bad is going to happen.I get scared because the name half nad then blood its just scary.

ReplyDeleteMy feeling’s as a reader when Rick introduced all that stuff was shooking it was a whole other world that was just appeared in the book. When he introduced camp half blood I could not believe that this would happen people with half animals people and that they had differnt lower bidies than Percy it kind of freaked me out with one guys having tweleve eyes. It also freaked me out with Mr. Brunner or chiron I should say having a horse body under him I thought he was like percy regular . The new changed characters. There was characters that had diferent things like animal parts. Such as horse parts, goats parts and more. There was flying horses and some that didn’t fly.Those people had really weird things like a charactre who had twelve eyes creepy! Those were the differnet characters. The role I think camp half blood Is going to play in percy’s life is hes going to learn things he dosent know and find out different things about the god’s. I think this role is going to teach him how to protect himself from these monsters and to know that this stuff that is happening to him it’s real even though it is freaky. He is going to see the other side of the world that he living in and hopefully take it seriously for him to survive.

ReplyDeleteWell how the author descibe it made me feel like entering a new whole. It also made me feel like i was right there seeing everything that was happing. This made me feel like this because, when they were describling the the camp on page 62. One page 62 it was descibe the camping say "the kids running around with the same orange shirt that Grover had on. And other things they were saying to describe the camp. I think they would play a training part of Percy's life. I say this because, at camps they teach you alot of things. So think they might teach him about what he is. Also teach him how to use his powers wisely and keep then un crontrol.
Percy has just escaped a monster attack from Montauk Beach and lost his mom. Now he is in camp half- blood. You know Mr. Brunner (chapter 1) he is really Chiron the centaur. Annabeth is just one of the campers. Mr. D is Dionysus the god of wine. I predict these new characters are here to help Percy.
ReplyDeleteI feel more interested to learn more about Chiron, Annabeth, Mr. D, and the camp. The new characters are all in camp half-blood. Chiron is obviously here to help Percy because he explains to Percy all about the gods. I have a feeling that the camp belongs to the gods. I do want to know who is really in danger in the book?
I had 2 feelings when Rick riordan introduced those 5 new information. One feeling was grateful. Every time I read and I find out new characters. When that happens I wonder how will the story end when they come in the story. Another feeling is surprised because Mr. Brunner confused Percy by changing his name to Chiron at Camp Half-blood.

Because he said to Percy “I would really be less casual about throwing those names around, if I was you”. Chiron was a guardian to Percy just like Grover. A role they all play is a guardian sent from Percy’s mother since she isn’t there.

ReplyDeleteWhen the author of the book introduces us to the 3 new people. I had a feeling that they would all know Percy. Right when I found out that Mr. Brunner, err… I mean Chiron was there at camp HalfBlood I was in total shock. I expected new people. But I didn’t expect Mr. Brunner.
These new and changed characters some already know Percy. And Percy already knows some of them. I think that they are all going to join a group, and defeat all the evil that they can find. It is very important for them to be with Percy because if it wasn’t for them then Percy would have not had an education and he would definetly have a messed up life.
I felt very strange when Percy went to camp half blood, but I also felt that he would be temporarily safe from any harm. I don’t really like Mr. D, because he seems kind of rude even though he’s really just trying to teach Percy a little about who he was. Annabeth seems like a sweet girl who just wants to help Percy. Chiron seems a lot different that the Latin teacher at Yancy, he was really a horse from the waist down and that’s pretty creepy to me. These new character are people that had played a role in Percy’s life before he got to camp half blood. I predict that they will lead (or guide) Percy through whatever new found challenges he would be facing.
ReplyDeleteWhen Rick Riordan introduced me to camp halfblood, Mr.D, Annabeth, and Chiron I felt acquired and excited to see in my mind the real Mr.dodds and everyone who is apart of camp halfblood. I think It is exciting to see grover change and chiron change as we get to know them.
ReplyDeleteOne of the New characters is Mr.D who i think is Dionysus. As we finished the end of chapter five it told us on page #71 that "I ran through D names from Greek mythology." "Wine." "The way grover cringed, as if Mr.D were his master." "You're dionysus". Another new character is Annabeth. I think Annabeth is a camper at camp halfblood who has to do with Greek mythology just like Percy. So I think that she will assists Percy on his quest or adventure.
In chapter 5, My feelings as a reader when Rick Riordan introduces us to Camp Half-Blood is that this is all new to me, so I had a lot of different emotions. But the one I had the most was that I was surprised because of Mr. Brunner or Chiron. Chiron was half horse and I was surprised. I think that all the new characters (Mr. D, Annabeth, and Chiron) are all family or just half bloods who protect Percy’s life. Mr. D is Zues son. Mr. D, he is the god of wine, also the camp director. Annabeth, I think she will become his friend and a camper at Half-Blood.
ReplyDeleteI think in the next chapter… They will start being role models to Percy or telling him what and what not to do at Camp Half-Blood. Percy will probably start liking Camp Half-Blood. But I didn’t think Mr. D will change for Percy. I hope he stays strong and always remember your family back home. I wish Percy Jackson the best.
I think Percy has been under some stress. I mean his mother is dead. The thing that killed him is a mythical beast. worst of all his best friend is a half goat half human satyr.
ReplyDeleteI really do believe that is a emotionally strong preson. He witnessed his mother die by a mythical beast. the mythical beast was really after Percy. worst of all his best friend is a goatboy satyr. He was sent to protect Percy from being killed before he is enrolled in camp half blood.
The roll of the new chiron will be Percy's new mentor and protcter. Dionitous is rude but he reminds me of the show two and a half men and the character charlie harper. Anebeth might be like his girl friend or his new best friend to me.
Percy’s life is horrible, because having demons chase you is weird ,having to see his mom die in front of him, and having guardians trying to protect percy. Having demons chase after me is weird because you have no idea why they are chasing you and you want answer’s .having guardians is awesome because they can protect from others. And having me see my mom die is terrible I would go crazy I would want to kill everybody in the world.

I think it was a good thing because know Percy is not on his own. Know he has people on his side. Mr. D is Dionysus the god of wine. But he was grounded; he has to what another century to go back to mount Olympus. He was always mad, well not mad he just hated his job. Annabeth is just a camper who helps out the counselors. Chiron was Percy’s Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, but then he changed into Chiron. Camp half-blood is a camp when you’re a half-blood as in; lets say Percy is half god and half human.

ReplyDeleteMy feelings towered this chapter when Rick Riordan introduces us to camp half-blood is happy. The reason I'm feeling happy is because I feel that Percy will be much more safer from danger, he has more people protecting him.
I think these new and changed characters are gods. Or maybe there they’re to help the other half bloods. The part they will play in Percy’s life is probably his teacher. They might teach him how to defend him self. And also to teach him how to use his powers wisely.
As a reader what I feel abut when Rick Riordan introduces it to the camp I felt wired because if I were to be Percy I would feel wired because I didn’t know who were them people and I didn’t know what they wanted to do to me. This new character I think that they are going to proct Percy from the monster. I think that Percy’s mother knew that some thing was going to happened because I think that she knew something bad was gong to happened when she took Percy to the camp and she also said that she was scared that she wouldn’t see Percy no more when he goes away to the camp. I think that she knew something bad was going to happen if he took Percy to the camp. I also think something is going to happened to Gabe becsuae I think that Ms.Dodds would send people to kill him so that is would be easier to get Percy.

Also, I think that Grover protecting Percy is not ok. Any ways it is Percy that saved Grover from that big demon.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction of Annabeth is that she is a un- normal half blood camper. I think that she is a evil demon after Percy. I think this because Annabeh was asking him so many questions that Percy couldn’t even answer, so that’s why I think she is a evil demon.
Grover is cool. I think that Grover is really Percy’s friend even though he is a donkey from the waist down. I think he is really trying to protect him.
Mr.Brunner is also cool. I think that him and Grover are really trying to protect Percy. Other wise I think the rest are like some sort of trap to get percy. They sound very suspicious.
My feelings towards the camp half-blood, is weird because I felt weird when they took him and when they killed his mother. I felt weird because they took my mo and killed her and I wouldn’t know they were going to do with me they might kill me and I would want to be killed and that’s why I would feel weird. And I would feel nervous because my algebra teacher tried to kill me too. So I wouldn’t feel safe to be there. I think that the characters pay strangers in his life because they were his teachers but they tried to kill him and they killed his mother so I think that they play strangers because they are not his real friends. The second reason that I think that they play strangers in his life because his real friend Grover didn’t let him no what was really going on and he didn’t ell him in till the end.

ReplyDeleteAs a reader I thought that when the Arthur (Rick Riordan) of the book Percy Jackson The Lighting Thief was a very imaginative person because he made up all these people/animals into his book like they were actually real and sometimes when I kept reading this chapter I could visualize and see the characters from the book insiade my brain. Something I think about the characters and how they will effect percys life is that they are really important and interesting and they are really important in percy’s life because they all have to teach him about his life and why he is in the HALFBLOOD CAMP and they all have to protect hi m from the evil demons.

And the girl with the grayish eye colors and the blonde curls and a beach tan might also play the role of a girl friend and they might fast forward time and they might get married and have children and Gabe might change.

All of these changed characters are new and improved all of them play a role in Percy's life especially Annabeth because she saved him, another character I think plays an important role in Percys life is Mr.Brunner/ Chiron because he pretended like he didnt care about him in the begining of the book but in the middle he started trying to save him and everythig.

When I first stared to read this chapter I was really happy because Percy is in the camp halfblood and he will be safe, but then when Percy woke up he seem to be around people who wanted to help but didn’t act like they wanted to. So as I began to read on I began to learn more about Mr. D and from what I was reading it says he was a pig human, and that Mr. Brunner was actually know as Chiron a half hourse half man and grover is a half goat half boy.

And when Percy got over the fact that his Latin teacher was a horse he had a nice tour through he was careful not to walk behind him.
Percy was having a good not time at half blood at the camp.
Chiron said to Percy that the half blood camp grew a nice crop for export to new York restaurants and mount Olympus.
Chiron said to Percy I agree with you and she says but its not my choice to judge the place Dionysus and the council of cloven elders must decide.
And Chiron said lets move along shall we but I wasn’t quite ready to let the subject drop and Chiron talked about my mother said Percy its like he is a word death,
My impression of camp half-blood is that it is very scary and existing, I think monsters live in the forest at camp half blood. I think this because Chiron said, “you could go in there but you would need some armor. In Percy’s cabin it is crowded in the book Percy said it’s like a gym when people are having an evaluation. Percy has to in cabin eleven because he is undecided with means they don’t know what cabin to put him in. précis inter counter maid him lord of the bathrooms because something in him made the water from the toilet hit everyone in the bathroom other than him. I think Percy’s victory with Clarisse made him like a powerful kid in the camp half-blood now. I also think Percy’s father is the god of the sea BECAUSE OF THE BATHROOM INSADENT.

His name wasn’t even Mr. Burnner, it was Chiron and the place Percy was in was called Camp Half Blood and there were a lot of strange things he saw. Percy thought he was in a coma but he his eyes were wide open and he can feel his body moving. He meet a girl named Annabeth and she was kind of harsh to people and she was good in battle so Percy suggested she was the daughter of the god, Athena, god of battle. Now, Grover was something called a satyr, which means something like half goat and half boy.

camp half-blood to Percy and us. My feelings as a reader are that Percy will be staying to find what is happening and why is he a half blood. I feel that MR.D, Annabeth, and Chiron are important in Percy’s life. MR.D is a new character but his real name is Dionysus and he is the son of Zeus. Dionysus is the god of wine and he is camp director. I think the role MR.D is going to play is to help Percy around the camp.

ReplyDeletewhat happened first in ch.5 percy moves to cabin 11, percy plays pinochle,or percy learns that Mr.D must work at camp Half-blood as punishment for taking a fancy to a wood nymph that was off limits??
